Course Description

Workplace violence is an increasing problem in organizations today and is especially challenging in the health care industry. Considered a human rights issue, workplace violence affects the dignity of millions of people worldwide and is a major source of inequality, discrimination, stigmatization, and workplace conflict. The consequences to organizations and employees are staggering and include negative financial, safety, and health-related outcomes.

Course Purpose

The goal/outcome of this course is for the learner to be able to describe the key characteristics and factors related to the prevalence of workplace violence, including its impact on the workplace and the employee, characteristics of potential victims and perpetrators, and guidelines for the prevention of workplace violence.

Course Objectives

Upon completion you will be able to do the following:

  1. Describe the extent of workplace violence.
  2. Define types of violence.
  3. Explain characteristics of workplace violence.
  4. Discuss key factors that contribute to horizontal violence.
  5. Differentiate between bullying, horizontal violence, and harassment.
  6. Describe the impacts of workplace violence on the organization and the employee.
  7. Identify risk factors for workplace violence.
  8. Identify characteristics of potential victims and perpetrators of workplace violence, including warning signs of violence.
  9. Describe guidelines for prevention of workplace violence.
  10. Explain various de-escalation strategies for workplace crisis.
